DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake men's tennis team remains in line to capture both the singles and doubles championships at the Missouri Valley Conference Individuals after posting a 7-4 combined singles/doubles ledger on Saturday (Nov. 9) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
In singles, junior Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina) registered a pair of victories in the main draw to advance to the title tilt versus Southern Illinois' Jonny Rigby on Sunday (Nov. 10).
Salibasic opened action besting Jakub Eisner of Illinois State, 6-3, 6-3, before edging sophomore teammate Ben Lott (Newcastle, England) in the semifinals, when after dropping the initial set, 7-5, Lott was forced to retire due to injury.
In the bottom half of the draw, junior Matt Frost (Cambridge, England) dispatched Jorge Cavero from Southern Illinois in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 7-5, before dropping a 7-6 (6), 6-4 decision against Jonny Rigby in the semifinals.
In doubles, Frost and Salibasic won their quarterfinal tilt versus Illinois State's Muddappa Appanervanda and Rodrigo Oliveira, 8-2.
Lott and freshman Euan McIntosh (Edinburgh, Scotland) earned an 8-1 victory past Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek of Southern Illinois, 8-4, before falling in the quarterfinals against the Salukis' Michael Kianicka and Rigby, 8-1
Competition at the MVC Individuals concludes on Sunday (Nov. 10) with doubles action getting underway at 9:00 a.m.
