DES MOINES, Iowa - In the first of two matches on the day for the Drake men's
tennis squad, the Bulldogs opened their home campaign registering a 7-0 triumph
past Graceland University on Friday (Feb. 1) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The win marked Drake's 24th-consecutive
home victory dating back to the 2010 campaign.
The No. 43 Bulldogs garnered
triumphs in all three doubles matches, securing the tally on the strength of an
8-1 decision from senior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia) and sophomore
Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia and
Herzegovina) at the No. 1 position over Raul Mendez and Rodolfo Sanchez.
Drake extended its
advantage to 3-0 in singles following wins by senior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) and sophomore Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England) on the
Nos. 1 and 4 courts, respectively.
Ghorbel dispatched
Mendez at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1, while Mullis bettered Ignacio Osse at No. 4, 6-0,
6-1.
Senior James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland), the
current Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, clinched the match,
downing David Uquillas at the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-2.
Adding to Drake's win
total in the affair with triumphs at the Nos. 3, 5 and 6 positions,
respectively, was Erasmus, sophomore Grant
Tesmer (Lincoln, Neb.) and senior Ryan
Drake (Hilton Head Island, S.C.).
The Bulldogs close
out their day entertaining UMKC in a 4:00 p.m. matinee affair at the Roger
Knapp Tennis Center.
