DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake men's tennis team closed out its brief two-match
homestand with a 7-0 triumph past Western Illinois (6-8) on Saturday (Feb. 16)
at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The victory was the
ninth straight for the Bulldogs (9-1) and extended Drake's home win streak to
29.
The tandem of
freshman Ben Lott (Newcastle,
England) and sophomore Alen Salibasic
(Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina) provided the Bulldogs with a 1-0 lead after
clinching the doubles point on the top court with an 8-2 decision over Mitch
Granger and Bradley Holt.
Sophomore Grant Tesmer (Lincoln, Neb.) opened
singles play for Drake dispatching Brandon Meeker at the No. 5 position, 6-0,
6-0.
Junior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) moved
the Bulldogs to within a point of victory after downing Ben Yue on the No. 2
court, 6-1, 6-2.
Collecting his second
match-clinching tally of the day for Drake was Lott, who registered a 6-2, 6-1
triumph against Granger at the No. 3 hole.
The Bulldogs
completed the shutout posting wins at the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 positions from
Salibasic, sophomore Ben Mullis
(Leicestershire, England) and senior Ryan
Drake (Hilton Head Island, S.C.).
Drake returns to
action on Saturday (Feb. 23) as the Bulldogs visit Iowa City, Iowa, to battle
Western Michigan in a 10:00 a.m. tilt.
