DES MOINES, Iowa - Sitting
at 10-1 on the campaign, the Drake men's tennis team added another gem to its
resume on Tuesday (Feb. 26) by achieving its highest ranking (27) in school
history when the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings were
unveiled. The ranking surpasses the previous high established on March 4, 2008,
when Drake checked in at No. 33.
"I will have to admit, the
team is very excited about being ranked No. 27," Drake head coach Davidson Kozlowski commented. "One of our goals for this season was to become the highest-ranked
team in school history. With this new ranking, we have achieved that. It
is always a good accomplishment to be able to mark off your goals, but we still
have a few more up on the board. I am a bit surprised that we were able
to realize this goal this so early in the season and now that we have it out of
the way we can squarely place our focus on our upcoming matches. We have
a very demanding March schedule, so we will really be tested and we shall find
out if we truly are deserving of this ranking."
The Bulldogs have rolled off 10 consecutive victories and stand at 10-1
entering their in-state showdown at Iowa on Wednesday (Feb. 27) at 6:00 p.m.
Drake then travels to Minneapolis, Minn., to battle No. 66 Minnesota on Friday
(March 1) and No. 14 Washington on Saturday (March 2). Match times versus the
Golden Gophers and Huskies are slated for 6:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.,
respectively.
