Twombly Highlights
Record Setting 2013 With MVC Most Outstanding Athlete Award
ST. LOUIS - Senior
Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) was
selected as the Most Outstanding Field Athlete (male) at the 2013 MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The well-deserved award comes after Twombly broke his own
school record previously set this season in the men's weight throw to win the
title in the event, his first.
"I went in telling myself that I was going to win a
championship," Twombly said. "I don't know if I really believed it though until
the last competitor finally threw."
Twombly's toss of 68-7.25 bested second place finisher,
Southern Illinois' Bradley Sauer, by two inches for the victory. It was a
top-16 mark nationally, which, if stands, will qualify him for next week's NCAA
Championships.
It was the third time Twombly had broken the record this
season. He began in January at the ISU Open with a throw of 65-0.75 and then
topped that mark on February 9, throwing 66-10.75 at the ISU Classic.
Finding such unprecedented success was not easy for Twombly
as he faced a good deal of adversity on the way.
"Going into the indoor season I didn't know what to really
expect," Twombly said. "I had fractured my hand towards the end of the fall."
His original goal was to throw 65 feet at some point in the
season. He accomplished that the very first meet.
Twombly has reset his goals. What once seemed only a dream
is now forming into a reality.
"My goals are to qualify to go to nationals and to throw
over 70 feet," he said. "I want to become an All-American and place at
nationals.
If his mark of 68-7.25 stands he will be there, at the 2013
NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 8-9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
