AMES, Iowa – Senior
Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) won
the women's 60-meter hurdles to lead four great performances for the Drake
University track and field teams Saturday at the ISU Classic.
Even after clipping a hurdle, Smith was able to recover and
win the race in 8.52, just one one-hundreth of a second off of her personal
best set a week ago. Teammate Sarah
Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) was fourth in the event in 8.60.
Senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin,
Kan.) built off of his success so far this season in the men's weight throw
with a second-place finish and a throw of 66-10.75 to shatter his own school
record.
“Isaac had an amazing third throw today,” Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown said. “We could
not have asked for a better performance from him.”
Twombly's throw is the third best throw in the Missouri
Valley this season and a top-20 throw nationally.
Brogan Austin (Boone,
Iowa) led off the day for Drake with a stellar performance in the men's 3,000
meters. The junior ran a time of 8:10.61, the second best time in school
history, against a very strong field to finish second in the event. Austin led
the majority of the race before being chased down by Jeffrey Mettler of South
Dakota in the final few hundred yards.
“Brogan competed very well today against an outstanding
field,” distance coach Dan Hostager said. “He's been so focused on his training so it will be
good for him to see that show up already. There's definitely more there so
we're excited about the rest of the season.”
The Bulldogs return to action next weekend at the Iowa
Classic in Iowa City, Iowa on Feb. 15. The meet will be the team's final
tune-up before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships the following week.
