Indianapolis, Ind. - Senior Isaac
Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) will compete in the weight throw at the 2013 NCAA
Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA announced Monday with
the release of the championship field.
Twombly
will step into the circle on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in Fayetteville, Ark.
"It
feels really good," Twombly said. "I didn't think I'd be here, but now that I
am I'm really excited to see what happens."
Twombly
will be the first thrower to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the program's
history. He is also the first Drake student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA
Indoor Championships since 2007. Derek Johnson, an all-American in the 60-meter
hurdles was the last Bulldog to qualify.
Drake
throws coach Mark Kostek saw a renewed focus in Twombly this season.
"He
had a disappointing junior year when he pulled his hamstring at the MVC
Championships," Kostek said. "He just had a focus that he really wanted to
achieve the goals of qualifying for the NCAA Championships and to win the MVC
title. He's already done both of those and we'll see where the chips will fall
when we get to Fayetteville next weekend."
Twombly
won the weight throw at the 2013 MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships by
tossing a school record of 68-7.25. The Bulldog record holder is looking
forward to the event to compete against the best in the nation.
"The
level of competition will be really competitive and that's something that I
really like," Twombly said. "Just to be there is a real blessing, a real honor."
Of
the 16 throwers in the championship field, the top eight throws will advance to
the finals for three more attempts.
