Drake's Twombly Finishes 14th At The 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships

Fayetteville, Ark. — Drake University senior thrower and school record holder Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) finished 14th in the weight throw with a mark of 62-4.5 at the 2013 NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday.

"It was great to gain some experience at such a high level of competition," Twombly said. "I didn't throw as well as I'd hoped, but it was great to be here and it's a lot of moentum going into the outdoor season."

Twombly's best toss of the event, 62-4.50, came in the third round of his flight. He also recorded a throw of 59-0.25 on his first throw and faulted on his second to finish seventh in his flight.

"I'm very impressed with Isaac," Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown said. "To end the season at the NCAA Championships is a thrilling opportunity that very few are talented enough to experience."

With his throw of 62-4.5 Twombly concluded a record-breaking season in the men's weight throw, becoming the first Drake men's field student-athlete to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Twombly entered the event ranked 16th in the field and improved two places to put himself in position to earn second team All-America honors.

Virginia Tech's Alex Ziegler won the men's weight throw with a toss of 73-8.25 in third round of the event. Ziegler, originally of Dischingen, Germany, is the defending NCAA champion in the outdoor hammer throw, winning the event at the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships, both held at Drake Stadium.

Twombly's season-best throw of 68-7.25 won the 2013 MVC Championships and stands as the third-best throw in the conference this season and the 16th-best overall in the nation.

The senior broke his own personal and school record three times this season including his MVC Championship throw. Previously, his throws of 65-0.75 at the ISU Open on Jan. 18 and 66-10.75 at the ISU Classic on Feb. 9 each shattered his own school and personal records. In addition to firmly etching his name in the Drake record books, he achieved both of his personal goals for the season in winning the Missouri Valley Conference title and qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

His indoor season sets him up nicely for the 2013 outdoor season which begins on March 22-23 at Arizona State. The senior heads into the outdoor season with similar goals of an MVC title and a berth in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in addition to a strong showing at the Drake Relays.
