AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Travis Marsh (Ankeny, Iowa) opened competition for the Drake men's and women's track and field team Thursday night at the 2013 NCAA Track & Field Championship West Preliminary Round hosted by the University of Texas.
Marsh competed in the 400-meter hurdles and ran a time of 52.84 to finish sixth in his heat. It was the second best time he ran all season and 35th overall in the event. He just missed finishing among the top 24 that advanced to the quarterfinals by 62 one-hundreths of a second.
Junior Brogan Austin (Boone, Iowa) was in the lead pack for the 10,000 meters for the early parts of the race before withdrawing from the race. Austin will aim to advance in the 5,000 meters on Saturday, a race which he won at the MVC Outdoor Championship and the Drake Relays this season.
Friday's action will also see senior Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) attempt to qualify in the men's hammer throw that begins at 2 p.m. The senior tandem of Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) and Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario) will look to advance in the 100-meter hurdles. Smith reached the quarterfinals last season only to be denied qualification to the finals by a mere hundreths of a second.
