Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Led by four players in double-figure scoring, the No. 13 Iowa State Cyclones cruised past the Drake University men's basketball team, 83-54, before a sellout crowd at the Big Four Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Drake (2-9) stayed within three possessions of Iowa State (9-1) for the first seven minutes of the game until the Cyclones started to pull away. The Bulldogs were paced by 10 points each from Trevor Berkeley (Tucker, Ga.) and Jacob Enevold Jensen (Lunderskov, Denmark). Enevold also added a game-high eight rebounds.
Iowa State was led by 13 points from Naz Long on 3-of-6 shooting from the arc and 12 points from point guard Monte Morris along with four assists as ISU had 25 assists to just 12 turnovers. Drake committed 18 turnovers that Iowa State converted into 26 points.
“First thing is that when you turn the basketball over, it's a layup at the other end,” said Drake head coach Ray Giacoletti. “So the very first thing you have to do is take care of the basketball. We turned it over 18 times tonight and the majority of them probably led to layups at the other end. That's the very first thing before you do anything else. They're very athletic, fast, and quick at every spot. They make you pay when you make a mistake.”
Drake paid for those mistakes early as they pulled within a bucket, 14-12, with 11:06 left in the first half but two turnovers on Drake's next three possessions led to a 7-0 ISU run to run the lead out to nine before it quickly ballooned to 16 points at halftime.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with an 8-5 advantage in the first three minutes of the half before back-to-back turnovers followed by three-pointers from Dustin Hogue and Morris put the Cyclones up 24 points, 58-34 with 12:30 left in the contest. ISU continued to push the pace and connect on eight three-pointers in the second half to quickly extend that lead to 30 or more points for the remainder of the game.
“We talked all week about effort and the need to match their effort and dictate instead of having someone dictate to us,” Giacoletti said. “Before you can talk about winning and those types of things, you've got to be able to do those two things first. I take my hat off to Iowa State. Obviously it's a very good team with their number 13 ranking.”
ISU shot 54.2 percent from the floor and 52.2 percent from three-point range while holding Drake to 38.8 percent shooting and an 0-of-8 showing from three-point range. The Bulldogs came into the game ranked in the top 30 nationally in three-point percentage. ISU also held a 9-rebound advantage in the second half as Drake was often forced to send three players back on defense on every shot to attempt to keep pace with ISU's up-tempo attack.
All 11 of Drake's active players saw four or more minutes of action to gain valuable experience against a nationally ranked opponent in front of a sellout crowd.
“We played so many young guys that you want to see come together and be able to talk and communicate and get us into things,” Giacoletti said. “Yes, it's about the day but it's about tomorrow, a month from now, a year from now to where we're going. The young guys did a pretty good job. I think at least the young group that was in there at the end sustained that. This should be a great example that if you want to get to big time college basketball, you just got a really good look and taste of it up close and personal of how it is at this level.”
Drake's freshmen scored 21 of the team's 54 points and accounted for half of the team's 12 assists. C.J. Rivers (Cahokia, Ill.) led that group with seven pointes, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday evening when they host Simpson College at 7:05 p.m. in the Knapp Center.
