DES MOINES, Iowa - In its final tune-up match before opening Missouri Valley Conference play on Sunday (March 30), the Drake women's tennis team registered a 7-0 victory over Upper Iowa (11-9) on Saturday (March 29) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs (11-3) faced a Peacocks' squad that had only five available players due to injury, meaning Drake needed only one triumph in doubles to claim the point and a 1-0 lead.
Collecting the tally for the Bulldogs with an 8-4 victory over Victoria Kulbokas and Iris Verweij on the No. 2 court was the tandem of sophomores Mariel Ante (Riverside, Calif.) and Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.).
Drake entered singles play maintaining a 2-0 advantage on the strength of a default win at the No. 6 position.
Sophomore Lea Kozulic (Varazdin, Croatia) pushed the Bulldogs to within a point of victory, 3-0, besting Laura Alvarez at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) followed by earning the match-clinching point for Drake, dispatching Kelly Jachymowski, 6-0, 6-0, on the No. 3 court.
The Bulldogs also received triumphs at the Nos. 1, 2 and 4 slots, respectively, from senior Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia), Ante and Eggleston.
Drake opens its Missouri Valley Conference schedule on Sunday (March 30) welcoming in-state rival Northern Iowa to the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Match time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
