WALNUT, Calif. – Drake University sophomore Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded the second-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in Drake history to finish second at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 8:51.84.
McCann's time, recorded in the Olympic Developmental Elite heat of the race, was the fastest steeplechase time by a Bulldog in 33 years, but shy of the school-record time of 8:39.29 by Vern Iwancin in 1981. McCann's time is currently 10th in the nation and the fastest in the Missouri Valley Conference this season by nearly 20 seconds.
Wyoming's Garrett Zans won the race with a time of 8:50.45.
McCann was the Bulldogs' lone competitor at Mt. SAC, the bulk of the squads will compete on Saturday at the Gateway Invitational in Edwardsville, Ill.
