CARBONDALE, Ill. – In a match that came down the final contest, it was Southern Illinois (14-6, 3-0 MVC) withstanding a late Drake charge to register a 4-3 triumph over the Bulldogs (12-4, 2-1 MVC) in women's tennis action on Sunday (April 6).
The two sides split decisions on the top two doubles courts setting the stage for a winner-take-all showdown at the No. 3 position.
The Salukis proved victorious in the affair as Arianda Cairo Baza and Polina Dozortseva edged sophomore Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) and senior Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia) in the tiebreaker to win the doubles point with an 8-7 (7) decision.
Sophomore Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) evened the contest at one opening singes with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Arianda Cairo Baza.
The Salukis regained the momentum registering triumphs at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions, respectively, to assume a 3-1 advantage.
Junior Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) began the Bulldogs' comeback charge besting Dozortseva at the No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-2.
Johnson squared the contest at three garnering a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 victory past Meagan Monaghan on the No. 3 court.
Securing the match-clinching tally for the Salukis at the No. 6 position over sophomore Lea Kozulic (Varazdin, Croatia) was Gisela Cairo Baza, with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
Drake returns to action hosting Bradley on Saturday (April 12) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Match time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
