Track And Field Scores In Three Events On First Day Of MVC Championship

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Drake University track and field teams scored in three events on the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Friday evening and three other athletes advanced to the finals.

All of the points on Friday came from the men's team with points in the javelin, hammer thrown and 10,000 meters to put the Bulldogs in fourth place after the first of three days of competition.

Phillip Beeler (Lenexa, Kan.) and David Silkman (Leawood, Kan.) finished third and seventh, respectively, in the javelin. Beeler recorded a season-best throw of 202-2 while Silkman threw 189-2. In the men's hammer throw, Andy Curtis (Manchester, Iowa) continued his strong season with a throw of 193-7.

The Bulldogs' other points came on the track in the 10,000 meters with Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) coming in seventh in 30:23.56. Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded the second-fastest time by a freshman to finish eighth in a personal best of 30:27.66.

The men's team also had two competitors qualify for finals, including Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) who turned in the fastest 1,500 meter time of the night at 3:52.40 to qualify for the finals. Steven Jordan (McFarland, Wis.) also qualified for the finals of the 200 meters with a time of 21.81, the third-fastest time of the day.

The women's team had Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.) qualify for the finals of the 200 meters thanks to a time of 24.56 to finish seventh in the preliminary heats. Tiara Winston (Denton, Texas) finished just outside of the qualifying threshold in ninth place in 24.62.

Erin Poss (Antioch, Ill.) narrowly missed scoring in the 10,000 meters as her personal best time of 36:41.24 was ninth. Kathryn Ambrose (Warrensburg, Mo.) also recorded a personal best by clearing 11-3.5 in the pole vault. Her clearance matched the eight-place height, but came in 11th on misses.
