Bulldogs Fall Short Of Advancing In 400-Meter Hurdles On Day 1 Of NCAA Preliminary Round

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Drake University track and field teams had a pair of competitors step into the blocks with aims of advancing through the NCAA West Preliminary Round. However, neither Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) nor Kai Asberry (Carrollton, Texas) made the cut to advance in the 400-meter hurdles, thus ending their 2014 season.

Yeager, a senior, and former MVC Champion, finished 39th overall with a time of 1:01.94. Running in lane six of the fourth heat, she got off to a strong start and was even with the leaders at the 200-meter mark before the pack, led by Texas A&M's Shamier  Little, pulled away on the wet track. Yeager finished seventh in the heat while Little posted the fourth fastest time on the day at 57.66.

Prior to the women's race and a brief rain shower, Asberry clocked a time of 52.59 in the men's race to finish 36th overall. Running on an island in lane nine, the sophomore was seventh in the event's second heat of the day.

Action for the Bulldogs at the NCAA West Preliminary continues on Friday at 10 a.m. with Andy Curtis (Manchester, Iowa) stepping into the circle for the hammer throw. In the evening session, Yeager returns to the track at 5:30 p.m. for the 100-meter hurdles and Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) will attempt to advance to the NCAA Championship in the steeplechase at 8:50 p.m.
