DES MOINES, Iowa – Five student-athletes from the Drake men's soccer team earned recognition for their efforts in the classroom as senior Alec Bartlett (Overland Park, Kan.) along with juniors James Grunert (Muskego, Wis.), Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn.), Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) and James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) were tabbed first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VI selections.
Bartlett and LeMay were named to the first team for the second consecutive year while Grunert, MacLeod and Wypych garnered the honor for the first time. All five Bulldogs are eligible for national CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable).
Bartlett, who holds a 3.51 GPA in biology, has started all 14 games this fall for the Bulldogs. The senior defender has registered one goal on seven shots on goal, and has helped anchor a Drake defense that has recorded four shutouts.
Grunert, who owns a 3.74 GPA in health sciences, has started all 14 games this year for the Bulldogs. The senior defender has registered two goals on four shots on goal, and has helped anchor a Drake defense that has recorded four shutouts.
LeMay, who maintains a 3.82 GPA in pharmacy, has played in 12 matches this season for the Bulldogs. The junior midfielder has scored two goals and tallied two assists.
MacLeod has started all 14 matches in the net for the Bulldogs in 2015, and has recorded four shutouts. The junior goalkeeper holds a 3.49 GPA in health sciences with a psychology minor.
Wypych has played in 13 matches for the Bulldogs this season. The junior midfielder is tied for the top mark in the Missouri Valley Conference in goals scored with six, including three game-winners. Wypych maintains a 3.69 GPA in international relations.
Drake travels to Loyola for a key MVC match this Saturday, Oct. 31 with first kick scheduled for 7 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
