INDIANAPOLIS – Drake University women's basketball senior guard Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) is one of 20 student-athletes selected to the 2015 Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Allstate Insurance Company announced Tuesday, Feb. 10.
For the third year, the prestigious award pays tribute to college basketball players at all levels for their impressive commitment to giving back to their communities and positively impacting the lives of those around them. Clark is the first Drake student-athlete and Missouri Valley Conference basketball student-athlete to be named to the Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Team.
Clark has volunteered at several events and organizations in the Des Moines area, including the Girls Scouts of Greater Iowa, Habitat for Humanity and Team IMPACT, as well as in the Drake community during her career. She participated in Seeds of Success, a Drake athletics program for student-athletes to volunteer their time at local schools with students in grades 6-8. Seeds of Success trains Drake student-athletes to become mentors, helping them to share their experiences around important and relevant character skills such as goal setting, overcoming obstacles, working hard, learning from your mistakes and living a life of character and integrity.
“As a student-athlete, Kyndal has been very committed to her academic, athletic and civic responsibilities,” said Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk. “She understands the importance of volunteerism and has worked diligently toward being a role model for the team and student-athletes alike. As a women's basketball player at Drake University, her selflessness and time management skills are proven, as well as leadership skills both on and off the court. We are so proud she is the first recipient of this award from Drake and the Missouri Valley Conference as Kyndal truly embodies the true spirit of teamwork and giving back.”
Clark and her teammates accomplished the program's goal of completing 1,000 community service hours during the 2013-14 school year. Upon completion of the goal last spring, the group immediately set a new goal to repeat more than 1,000 hours in 2014-15, and have already accomplished nearly 50 percent of the goal.
The Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams are each comprised of 10 student-athletes; five from NCAA Division I and five from NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA. Nominations were submitted by sports information directors and coaches at colleges and universities across the country, and a record total of 93 nominees from the WBCA and 158 nominees from the NABC were announced in early December 2014.
Distinguished voting panels comprised of former coaches, college basketball legends and media members narrowed down the outstanding submissions to the final two teams. Leading the voting panels for their respective teams were basketball star and University of Tennessee legend Tamika Catchings and former Duke University student-athlete, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill.
Joining Clark on the 2015 Division I Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® are Alex Cohen of Northwestern University, Bria Goss of the University of Kentucky, Stephanie Leon of the University of Delaware and Devon Roeper of Columbia University.
“Community service and giving back are an integral part of Allstate's core values, and recognizing the WBCA and NABC Good Works Team® for their commitment in this area is one of the efforts we are most proud of,” said Pam Hollander, vice president of marketing for Allstate Insurance Company and a member of the 2015 WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams® selection panels. “In our third year partnering with the WBCA and NABC, we could not be more honored to have a role in recognizing truly deserving young athletes who encourage all of us to make a positive impact on those around us.”
The Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams have made it their mission to protect the integrity of the sport by highlighting the “good works'” that occur after the final buzzer. In addition to being college athletes and full-time students, these 20 young women and men have dedicated their invaluable free time to making a difference in the world around them. They each boast a long list of remarkable accolades that serve to inspire fans and communities across the nation.
“The WBCA is extremely excited to continue its partnership with Allstate in showing appreciation for these student-athletes who take time to invest in and further their respective communities,” said WBCA executive director Danielle Donehew. “Congratulations to these outstanding 10 student-athletes who have helped make a difference and will continue to be leaders on and off the basketball court."
Members of the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team® will be invited by Allstate, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, to the 2015 WBCA Convention and 2015 NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, where they will participate in a community project benefitting the host city.
