SANTEE, Calif. – The Drake University men's golf team finished fifth at the WIU Carlton Oaks Invitational with a three-round team score of 958. Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with a 54-hole score of 237 (77-82-78) to finish tied for 15th in the individual standings.
The Bulldogs posted the third lowest third-round score of the day to improve one spot on the final day of the two-day event staged on the par 72, 7,117 yard, Carlton Oaks Golf Club.
“I was happy to see the guys battle through today,” said Drake head coach Matt Lewis. “We all played with some inconsistency from hole to hole and had too many big numbers. We were able to post some lower scores today which led to a better team score.”
Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) finished one stroke behind Leland in a tie for 17th place by carding a 238 (81-80-77). The Bulldogs' three remaining competitors all finished within five places and two strokes of each other as Matt Lavery (Peoria, Ill.) fired a 242 (82-82-78) to finish tied for 20th. Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.) tied for 23rd with a 243 (82-80-81) and Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished with a 244 (83-82-79) to tie for 25th place.
“Overall, the team and myself are disappointed with our result as this was not what we expected for our first tournament of the spring,” Lewis said. “But we now have three-and-a-half weeks until our next event and there's a lot from this week we can work on to prepare for our next tournament.”
That next tournament comes March 9-10 in Bluffton, S.C. at the Colleton River Intercollegiate.
