Women?s Tennis Clipped By Nebraska, 5-2

LINCOLN, Neb. – Despite dropping the doubles point, Nebraska rallied to earn a 5-2 victory over the Drake University women's tennis team Friday evening in Lincoln, Neb.

Drake took a 1-0 lead in the match, claiming the doubles point as the teams of Mariel Ante (Riverside, Calif.)/Tess Herder (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.)/Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) both won 6-2. Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.)/Adrienne Jensen (Iowa City, Iowa) took their doubles match, 6-3.

However, Drake wasn't able to maintain that momentum as the four courts at the Lincoln Racquet Club slowed played and forced members of the team to wait extended periods of time for their singles matches to resume.

"We came out strong winning all three doubles matches,” said Drake head coach Sadhaf Pervez. “We knew it was going to be a long day with only having four courts to compete on. You have to give credit to Nebraska, they competed very well in the singles and they came out very strong after the doubles point.”

Johnson claimed a victory for the Bulldogs in singles action, earning a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Lisa Andersson at No. 3. At No. 5, Eggleston pushed Katerina Matysova to three sets before falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Nebraska claimed the matches at Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 6 in straight sets.

“This was a great match for our girls to learn how to play with the pressure of waiting to go out and play a match,” Pervez said. “I feel we let our nerves beat us a little today. It was a great experience for our freshman, but we need to recover quick from this loss. We have a very tough Eastern Michigan team to play tomorrow and the best teams can rebound after a tough loss.”

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday morning, facing Eastern Michigan in Lincoln, Neb., at 11 a.m.
