Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Sophomore center Jacob Enevold Jensen (Lunderskov, Denmark) scored a career-high 24 points with 12 rebounds and four blocks in a tough, 52-50, overtime loss to Bradley Thursday evening in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at the Scottrade Center.
Enevold's career night came on an impressive 14-of-14 showing at the free-throw line, all in the second half and overtime.
“I just felt I had it today,” Enevold said. “I wasn't worried about anything. I was just at ease and that's when I shoot the best.”
However, it was a pair of Bradley free throws by Tramique Sutherland with 2.7 seconds left in overtime that sealed the win for the Braves.
“The way I saw it, Gary [Ricks] was helping and trying to jump in the passing lanes,” said Drake head coach Ray Giacoletti of the call that put Sutherland at the free-throw line. “He [Ricks] somehow got his hand on the wrist or something. He was doing the correct thing.”
Gary Ricks, Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 10 points in his final game in a Drake (9-22) uniform while Karl Madison (Springfield, Ill.) had a season-high six assists and one turnover in 37 minutes of action. Auston Barnes scored 13 points, including a critical three-pointer in overtime, and Nate Wells had 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks for Bradley (9-23).
After trailing for nearly the entire first 14 minutes of the second half, Drake took the lead, 39-38, with 5:47 left on two free throws from Enevold. However, Bradley's Warren Jones drained a three-pointer with 1:20 left to knot the game at 43-43. Enevold twice blocked Bradley's attempt to win the game and gave the Bulldogs the ball with 12 seconds left in regulation. But Drake's attempt to win the contest in regulation was just off the mark to send the contest into overtime.
Bradley struck first in overtime on a Wells put-back before Enevold tied the contest again on two free-throws with 2:42 left. He would do the same again with 1:16 remaining before Barnes nailed his three-pointer with 1:09 on the clock to give the Braves a 50-47 lead.
“Barnes hits a three in transition out of our press and that's normally what you want, them to shoot the ball quick,” Giacoletti said. “That's what you're going to give up, and he hit it.”
A Chris Caird (Daventry, England) drive to the basket followed by a free throw from Trevor Berkeley (Tucker, Ga.) tied the game at 50-50 with 16 seconds left to set up the game-winning sequence at the free-throw line for the Braves. The Bulldogs had one final shot to win the game, but the half-court heave was off the mark to end the Bulldogs' season.
“The last play was designed to be thrown long and our timing wasn't right,” Giacoletti said. “We've got to be able to do a better job of being able to execute those plays down the stretch, but I'm proud of this group and how they continued to fight.
“From where we were at over Christmas to where we're at now, is two different teams. I just feel bad for the guys in that locker room not to be able to play another game.”
