DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University football team has selected three captains for the 2015 season, second-year head coach Rick Fox announced Monday, May 11. Serving as captains and the team's leaders on and off the field for the upcoming season will be John Hugunin (Oswego, Ill.), Brad Duwe (Dubuque, Iowa) and John McMahon (Algonquin, Ill.).
“I couldn't be more excited about who our team and coaches have selected for our 2015 captains,” said Fox. “While it will certainly take our entire staff and team influencing one another towards achieving our goals these three men will have a special role as leaders this year.”
Hugunin, a fifth-year senior linebacker, was one of four team captains last year and was also tabbed second team All-Pioneer Football League in 2014. He was second on the team with 89 tackles in nine games. One of his teammates described him as “the heart and soul' of the team.
“John is a second year captain for us who is a tremendous leader and player and who bleeds Bulldog blue. We look forward to his leadership again this fall,” noted Fox.
Duwe, a fifth-year senior, solidified the secondary that allowed just 193.8 passing yards per game last season. He tallied 40 tackles and led the team with eight pass breakups to earn second team All-PFL honors. In the words of some of the players who voted for him as captain, “Brad gives relentless effort, and he is always there when you need him.”
“Brad is one of the toughest players physically and mentally that I have coached. Additionally he has become a great mentor for our younger players,” said Fox.
McMahon, a fifth-year senior anchors the offensive line and started and started all 11 games last season at center and earned second team All-PFL honors.
“The best way to describe John is solid as a rock. He is a steadying presence on our offense and for the team as a whole,” said Fox.
The three captains will lead the Bulldogs into the 2015 season on Sept. 5 when they host William Jewell at 6 p.m. The home opener is one of five home contests at Drake Stadium in 2015.
