Johnson Earns ITA Regional Honor

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University's Maddie Johnson (Onalaksa, Wis.) garnered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award, the governing body announced Tuesday.

The honor is given annually to the player who best exhibits outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Johnson is a psychology major and holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom. On the court, she posted a 53-20 combined singles/doubles record and was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference select team.

“This is a huge honor for Maddie and our program. We are known to be very competitive, loud high-energy type of team, but this shows you that we instill good sportsmanship in our program,” said Drake head coach Sadhaf Pervez. “Maddie exemplifies what [Athletic Director] Sandy (Hatfield Clubb) has preached to all of our student-athletes about acting with integrity. This is a first for our program and something I want our women to strive for in the future.”
