DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake University football team's first scrimmage of the 2015 season ended at halftime due to severe weather with the defense ahead 26-22.
The coaching staff implemented a scoring system in which the offense got points for first downs (1), plays of 20 or more yards (1), field goals (3), touchdowns (6), extra points (1). The defense was awarded points for three-and-outs (3), stops on downs (2), turnovers (5), touchdowns (11), safeties (2) and extra points (1).
The defense forced the offense to get a slow start as senior Cody Stepanek stopped the offense's second drive with an interception.
On the fourth drive of the day, the offense scored its only touchdown of the day on a three-play drive. Andy Rice completed 10-yard touchdown pass to Eric Saubert, who caught two passes from Rice the prior two plays.
Senior Cody Thibault orchestrated the Bulldogs next best drive as he lead the offense into field goal range. Senior Cam Bohnert did all the rest, drilling a 37-yard field goal.
The defense didn't allow the offense's running game much success and limited the offense from making any big plays through the air.
The Bulldogs will stay off the practice field on Sunday as part of a scheduled day off while the staff reviews film of the scrimmage before returning to the turf on Monday for an afternoon scheduled practice.
