DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University head men's golf coach Matt Lewis released the Bulldogs' 2015 fall schedule on Wednesday that features five tournaments and is highlighted by hosting the inaugural Zach Johnson Invitational.
"I am very excited for coach Lewis and the Drake men's golf team as they will be hosting a collegiate event this fall,” said Drake alum Zach Johnson, who played for the Bulldogs from 1995-1998 and won his second major title of his career with a victory at last month's Open Championship. “I know this is something he has wanted to do and has been planning for a couple of years. It is truly an honor for this event to be named after me!"
Drake will host the Zach Johnson Invitational at the Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines on Oct. 5-6. The Bulldogs will welcome Bradley, Creighton, Omaha, Oral Roberts, North Dakota, South Dakota, SIUE and UNI for the two-day event.
"We will get the opportunity to compete against quality opponents on many challenging golf courses this fall. The highlight of our schedule is that we get to host the first-ever Zach Johnson Invitational. We are so proud to be able to name this event after Zach for his time at Drake University and for all of the success he has had,” said Lewis. “This has been in the works for some time, and I am so excited to have a home tournament for my players, their families and friends, the city of Des Moines and Drake University. Our goal is to host a premier event that hopefully will be one of the top tournaments in the country.“
The Bulldogs open their fall slate on Sept. 13 at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate hosted by Illinois State in Normal, Ill., followed by the Badger Invitational on Sept. 27 hosted by Wisconsin in Madison, Wis. Drake wraps up the fall portion of its schedule at the Bill Ross Invitational on Oct. 12 hosted by UMKC in Kansas City, Mo. and the ODU/OBX Invitational on Oct. 25 in Powells Point, N.C.
