Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Koree Willer scored a pair of goals to lead the Iowa State Cyclones past the Drake women's soccer team, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Cownie Soccer Complex.
“Today's game wasn't a very good showing of ourselves,” said head coach Lindsey Horner. “We were right there with ISU in the number of chances we created, but we didn't force their keeper to make a good save.”
Juniors Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) led Drake (3-6) in shots with four each. As a team, the Bulldogs finished with 15 shots while the Cyclones had 18.
Rodgers had two scoring chances that narrowly missed with the first midway through the second half hitting the post and later on a one-on-one with Iowa State (5-4) goalie Lindsey Hendon Rodgers' shot missed wide.
“Rebecca created some dangerous moments hitting the post and missing a one-on-one, but we are asking a lot of ourselves to score multiple goals to dig out of a hole,” Horner said. “Conceding early and soft goals has been our Achilles heel this fall.”
Willer's first goal came early as she beat the Drake defense and put one in the bottom right corner of the goal past Bulldog goalie Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa) to put the Cyclones up 1-0 just over 11 minutes into the game. She added her second goal at the 47-minute mark when she collected a blocked shot by Morris and pushed it past her to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
“Iowa State is a regionally ranked and beat a top-10 team this year, but if we set the tone at the beginning of each half and defend with an edge the way we did at the end of the game, we have the potential to be a hard team to break down and today's result is different,” Horner said.
Drake has a quick turnaround for its next game, as the Bulldogs will host former Missouri Valley Conference rival, Creighton, in a midweek game on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
“We have one more game to gain some experience and momentum before MVC play so we should see the best version of ourselves on Tuesday,” Horner said.
