CHICAGO, Ill. – The Drake University volleyball team struggled to generate offense and was out-blocked in a 3-0 loss at Loyola on Friday, Oct. 14, evening. The Bulldogs dropped the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-22.
Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) had eight kills for Drake (11-10, 2-5 MVC) and seven digs as she recorded her 900
th career kill and dig as just a junior. Chicago native
Odessa Cody added seven kills on 20 attempts while
Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) and
Kameo Pope (Belle Plaine, Iowa) each added six kills.
Quinn Spieker notched a career-high 16 kills for the victorious Ramblers (9-11, 4-3 MVC) while Gabi Maciagowski added 10 as Loyola hit .311 while limiting Drake to just .142. The Ramblers also held a 12-3 advantage in blocks.
Loyola used a 5-1 run toward the end of the first set to open up a 21-15 lead that it would use to take the first set, 25-19. The Bulldogs fell behind, 8-4, early in the second sent but then assembled a 9-0 run behind
Paige Aspinwall's (Dayton, Minn.) serving. Aspinwall also led Drake with 17 assists.
However, Loyola rallied back with a 5-0 run later to take an 18-16 lead. Minutes later, Drake retook the lead at 21-19, but Loyola answered again with five-straight points to later take the set, 25-23, and claim a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set with close early, but Loyola eventually pulled away with an 18-14 lead. Three straight-points later pulled the Bulldogs within a point, but Drake could get no closer as Loyola closed out the set with a 25-22 win to take the set and match.
The Bulldogs remain in Illinois and travel to Peoria on Saturday to face Bradley at 7 p.m.
