WICHITA, Kan. – The Drake University volleyball completed the season series against Wichita State on Saturday, Oct. 29, evening with a 3-0 loss to the Shockers at Koch Arena.
Drake (13-13, 4-8 MVC) nearly rallied for a first-set win before falling in straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15. Odessa Cody (Chicago, Ill.) led the Bulldogs again with nine kills while Chandelle Davidson (Gretna, Neb.) had 16 assists. Capris Quaites (Omaha, Neb.) and Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) each had four blocks as the Bulldogs held a 7-5 advantage in blocks.
Wichita State (16-7, 9-3 MVC) hit .248 in the win as Mikaela Raudsepp, Tabitha Brown, Jody Larson each had nine kills while Emily Hibbert had 33 of the team's 41 assists.
Drake opened the match facing a severe 20-10 deficit, but went on a 10-1 run behind Michelle Thommi's (Omaha, Neb.) serving to pull within a point at 21-20. Schoene and Cody each had three kills during that run, but WSU pulled back ahead by three points before Drake pulled back within one, 24-23, before a Brown kill ended the set for WSU, 25-23.
The Bulldogs opened the second set with a 10-5 lead to force the Shockers into a timeout. However, a 10-5 run WSU tied the match at 15-15. Neither team would lead by more than two points until a 4-0 WSU run gave the Shockers a 23-19 lead that they would use to take the set, 25-21.
After the intermission, Drake was unable to maintain that momentum with WSU reeling off a 14-3 run to take a 20-9 lead. Facing that deficit, the Bulldogs were unable to seriously threaten the Shockers in dropping the set, 25-15, to take the match and the season series with the 3-0 win.
Following this weekend's road trip against the top two teams in the MVC, the Bulldogs return home on Monday to host Indiana State. Monday's 7 p.m. match will be the first meeting of the season between the Bulldogs and Sycamores.
