DES MOINES, Iowa – Led by 17 kills from junior
Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa), the Drake University volleyball team defeated Indiana State, 3-0, on Monday, Oct. 31, at the Knapp Center.
Inderski's 17 kills came on 32 attempts while
Makena Schoene (Seattle, Wash.) added nine kills and
Kameo Pope (Belle Plaine, Iowa) had eight kills along with seven blocks.
"Kyla had an amazing night," said Drake head coach
Darrin McBroom. "But if you talked to her about her success, she'd talk about the middle blockers opening up the court and the setters for the great sets they were giving her. I'm proud of her, she's worked hard on her game all season and tonight it all came together and she really shined."
Drake (14-13, 5-8 MVC) claimed the sweep by set scores of 25-17, 25-17, 25-23, to win its third-straight home match over the Sycamores
"Anytime you can get a sweep over any team in the Valley, that speaks well for your team," McBroom added. "Indiana State is a very strong team and nearly even with us on paper."
Indiana State (9-15, 3-9 MVC) was paced by nine kills from Cassie Kawa while Rachel Griffin had 23 of the team's assists.
Drake hit .295 in the first set as Inderski recorded nine kills to open the match. The set was tight early, but a 7-0 run behind
Chandelle Davidson's (Gretna, Neb.) serving gave the Bulldogs a 16-9 lead that they would use to cruise to a 25-17 win.
The second set followed much the same pattern as Davidson and
Courtney Morehead's (Bellevue, Neb.) serving keyed a 9-1 run that put the Bulldogs up 16-11. That lead soon stretched to 20-13 as Drake took the set, 25-17.
Drake trailed early in the third set, but four-straight points, including two kills from Pope, tied the set at 14-14. However, Drake was unable to take the lead and found itself down 23-21 late in the set. A kill from
Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.), a block from Inderski and Pope, a Morehead ace and a final kill from Pope accounted for four-straight points to win the set, 25-23, and take the match, 3-0.
The Bulldogs hope to take the momentum from Monday's win to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take on UNI on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center. The contest will be broadcast via
The Valley On ESPN3.
