Women's Basketball Set To Host Wyoming Sunday In Home Opener

This is the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and the Cowgirls

DES MOINES, Iowa – After playing its first three games of the season on the road, the Drake University women's basketball team return to the Knapp Center to host Wyoming on Sunday, Nov. 27. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on The Valley On ESPN3.

Drake (1-2) welcomes Wyoming (4-1) coming off of close defeats at Creighton and Iowa State last week. The Bulldogs lost the two games by a combined 11 points and had fourth-quarter leads in each contest.

Sophomore Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) played two of her best games against the Bluejays and Cyclones. At Creighton, Bachrodt scored a then career-high 16 points and added five rebounds and four steals. Her career mark didn't last long as she went for 17 points and added six rebounds and four assists at Iowa State. Bachrodt is averaging 12.3 points while shooting 55.6 percent which ranks second in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Senior point guard Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa) scored 16 points at Iowa State to surpass the 1,000-point mark in her outstanding career. She is the 29th player in program history to reach the scoring mark. Ingle, who has 557 career assists to rank third in program history and current NCAA players in that category, is one of five Bulldogs to score more than 1,000 points and hand out more than 500 assists in a career. Ingle joins former Drake standouts Jenni Fitzgerald (1986-90), Connie Newlin (1978-82), Kay Riek (1980-84) and Stephanie Schmitz (1998-02), who all accomplished the feat.

Senior forward Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) also made a move on the all-time points list at Drake and in the MVC. Wendell scored 20 points at Iowa State and moved up to No. 5 all-time at Drake with 1,932 points. Wendell was No. 7 going into the game as she passed Jill Martin (1,928) and Carla Bennett (1,930). Wendell is fourth among all active NCAA players in career points and moved past Bennett on the all-time MVC list to 10th.

Drake is the league-leader in points (81.0), field goal percentage (46.7), free throw percentage (82.0) and assists per game (18.7) while Ingle leads the MVC in assists per game (7.3) and Wendell in points per game (24.3). Ingle is averaging 16.3 points while sophomore Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) is the fourth Bulldog in double figures at 12.0 points to go along with a team-leading 8.3 rebounds. Rhine is just 24 points away from 500 in her outstanding young career.

Sunday's game will be the first-ever meeting between Drake and Wyoming. The Cowgirls have won three-straight home games after blasting Adams State, 79-40, Tuesday. Five different players average at least 6.0 points a game in Wyoming's balanced scoring.

Following Sunday's game, Drake remains at the Knapp Center as the Bulldogs host Northern Illinois Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
