Women’s Basketball Defeats Wyoming, 63-50, In Home Opener

Drake continues its homestand Wednesday night when it welcomes Northern Illinois to the Knapp Center

DES MOINES, Iowa – In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Drake University women's basketball team defeated Wyoming, 63-50, Sunday, Nov. 27 afternoon in its home opener at the Knapp Center.
 
Senior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) shot 8-of-11 to tally a game-high 18 points. Wendell also nabbed a career-high seven steals and added five assists and three rebounds. For the third-consecutive game, sophomore Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) scored in double-figures with 11 points against the Cowgirls.
 
The Bulldogs welcomed back redshirt sophomore Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.), who missed last season due to injury. Jonas had eight points, three rebounds and one steal in her season debut.
 
Drake (2-2) opened the fourth quarter with a 47-39 lead before Wyoming went on a 10-0 run bringing them within striking distance of the Bulldogs at 50-49 with 5:41 to play. However, a 13-1 run over the final five minutes of the game allowed Drake to pull away for the win.
 
In only their second road game of the season, Wyoming (4-2) shot 19-of-44 (43.2 percent). The Cowgirls were led by Liv Roberts who tallied 17 points and added five rebounds. Clara Tapia was also in double-figures at 13 points and added four rebounds.
 
In a game of three-pointers, Drake shot 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) behind the arc while Wyoming made 8-of-21 (38.1 percent). Both teams struggled with turnovers having a combined 45 and with 49 points combined off turnovers. 
 
The Bulldogs will continue their homestand welcoming Northern Illinois to the Knapp Center on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 1350 ESPN Des Moines and The Valley on ESPN3.
