TUSCON, Ariz. – The Drake University softball team split a pair of games Friday at the Wildcat Invitational. Drake closed the day defeating North Dakota State, 4-0 after falling to Ball State, 17-2 in five innings earlier in the day.
Drake (5-3) was led by junior pitcher
Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.), now 3-2 on the season, who had a near-perfect game while shutting out the Bison. Newman pitched seven innings giving up only one hit and striking out 11 batters and she faced just one batter more than the minimum. The hit came in the seventh inning with one out, and she quickly ended the game by getting the next two hitters out. Newman has now recorded 10 or more strikeouts in a game three times already this year.
The Bulldogs were helped by junior
Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) and freshman
Sarah Maddox (Henderson, Nevada) who both went a combined 3-6 at the plate in the two games. Maddox also scored two runs and had one run batted in while Alexander added one run scored.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the second inning against North Dakota State (1-6) on a RBI single by senior
Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) which scored Maddox. Maddox then extended the Drake lead to two runs at 2-0 with her own RBI single in the third, scoring Alexander. Freshman
Abby Buie (Gardner, Kan.) then stole home base in the fourth before junior
Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) scored in the seventh on a throwing error.
Ball State (2-4) struck early taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run. A six-run second inning and five-run third inning extended the Cardinals to a 13-0 lead over the Bulldogs, and later the Cardinals added four additional runs. The Bulldogs scored two runs on singles in the third inning, batted in by senior
Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa) and sophomore
Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.).
Junior
Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.), now 2-1 on the season, pitched four innings for the Bulldogs against Ball State giving up 12 runs (10 earned) and walking four batters.
Drake has a rematch against No. 10 Arizona on Saturday with the game beginning at 6 p.m. CST before facing Boston College at 8 p.m. Arizona defeated Drake, 7-0, Thursday evening.
