DES MOINES, Iowa — Cathryn Cheek, a 5-10 outside hitter, has joined the Drake women's volleyball team, head coach
Darrin McBroom announced March 13. Cheek is transferring to Drake after spending the last two seasons at the University of Oklahoma.
At Oklahoma, Cheek saw action in 15 sets and registered 21 kills, 13 digs and six blocks for last season as a sophomore for the Sooners. As a freshman, she competed in one match.
"I am so excited to have Cathryn join our program," McBroom said. "She comes from a strong background and a very good club program. She is a competitor and I fully expect that she will compete for a starting role this fall. She is a talented and capable hitter on both pins, and she exhibits strong ball control skills in the backcourt."
Cheek will be eligible to compete immediately for the Bulldogs as a junior and has been participating in offseason workouts with the team.
"It can be difficult for a transfer student-athlete to make the transition to a new school, especially at semester," McBroom said. "But she has made a quick transition and is off to a great start with our program."
A 2015 graduate of Coppell High School in Coppell, Texas, Cheek was a three-time letter winner and served as team captain and led the squad in kills her senior year. She earned Texas 6A-7 All-District First Team honors in 2014 and was also listed as Lonestar Volleyball All-Texas Player to Watch in 2013 and 2014.
Cheek was a two-time Texas 5A-5 All-District First Team member and helped her team to the Texas 5A State Championships in 2011 and 2012. Academically, she was a member of the National Honor Society where she served as an officer and was a two-time All-State Academic selection.
Cheek played seven seasons for the highly regarded Dallas Skyline club team where she was named the team MVP in 2012. She helped lead the team to the 2014 MLK Tournament Championship. Cheek was named to the 2014 Tour of Texas Club Championship Team and 17 Open Team.
