CLEMSON, S.C. – The Drake University rowing team defeated Marist and Purdue in a trio of races in a scrimmage to end its week-long spring break training trip in Clemson, S.C. Drake, which arrived in S.C. on March 10, spent the week on Lake Hartwell. The team battled unusually cold temperatures for the state, but managed to never skip a day on the water despite tough cold and windy conditions.
"We had a really good week of training," said head coach
Charlie DiSilvestro. "It was a cold week for South Carolina with cold temperatures and wind just about every day. Not ideal conditions. Didn't miss anytime though so that was good."
Drake shared the water with numerous other collegiate programs, who expected to have a week of warm temperatures and ideal water conditions. The Bulldogs overcame the adversity and really put together a good week heading to the first official race next weekend. Drake defeated Marist and Purdue in both varsity 8+ 2,000-meter races and in the 2
nd varsity 8 1,000-meter race.
"Lot of good technical work and good improvements. Rowed really well on Friday night against Marist. Stayed competitive with them, who I consider one of the best and fastest in the conference (MAAC). We have a long way to go, but it is always good to be close to the fastest team in the conference. The team liked the way they rowed and had a good week of training. Excited to get home and prepare for our next race in Kansas."
Drake officially opens the spring season at Kansas on March 25.
