MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Drake University men's tennis team lost to No. 32 Minnesota, 5-2, on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
"We had incredible doubles play again today. We will definitely take positives from that," said Drake head coach
Davidson Kozlowski.
The Bulldogs once again took care of business during doubles to earn the doubles point.
Vinny Gillespie and
Tom Hands defeated Marino Alpeza and Justyn Levin, 6-3 at No. 2, while
Ben Stride and
Barny Thorold topped Stefan Milicevic and Eli Ogilvy, 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
The Gophers tied it up at 1-1 with a victory at No. 5 singles.
Gillespie gave Drake a 2-1 lead with a 6-1, 7-6 win over No. 78 Matic Spec at No. 1, improving to 10-1 this season.
"Vinny had another great day by picking up another nationally ranked singles win," said Kozlowski.
Minnesota went on to clinch the win with three consecutive straight set win at No. 3, No. 2 and No. 6, respectively.
"This week we will rest and rehab to try and get our boys ready for ninth-ranked Michigan," said Kozlowski.
The Bulldogs' schedule doesn't get any easier as they travel to No. 9 Michigan on Friday March 10 at 6 p.m.
