Men's Basketball Shows First Look At Upcoming Season With Blue-White Exhibition

Bulldog fans get their first look at the 2018-19 roster.

The Drake University Men's basketball team welcomed fans back to the Knapp Center Sunday, Oct. 7, afternoon for the program's Blue-White exhibition presented by True North. The Bulldogs faced off against each other in four, eight-minute simulation games. The lineups for the Blue and White teams changed each game as first-year head coach Darian DeVries showcased the Bulldogs' new-look roster.

Antonio Pilipovic (Cologne, Germany) opened the first game with a three-pointer for the White team. Tremell Murphy (Griffith, Ind.) responded for Blue scoring twice in the first minute and a half. The teams were tied going into the final minute when senior Nick McGlynn (Stoughton, Wis) scored the final points to give Blue the 9-7 win.

Game two started off with three three-pointers from Nick Norton (Bloomington, Ill.) and D.J. Wilkins (Merrillville, Ind.) for Blue and Brady Ellingson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) for White. Nick McGlynn went 2-for-2 at the line with 90 seconds left in the game to give White a one-point lead, but Norton's buzzer beater got the 21-20 win for Blue.

"I think the biggest thing people will like about this team is how hard they play and how connected they play," said Drake head coach Coach Darian Devries. "They're a hungry group and they love playing basketball. I told them today to have fun with it, play for the joy of it and put on a show for the crowd."

Tremell Murphy scored first in game three for the White team, but senior McGlynn responded quickly with a three-pointer for Blue. With 2:40 left in the game Norton brought Blue's lead to seven points with back-to-back threes. White fell to Blue 23-15 in game three.

Game four started with a tip-in for White from Ellingson. But Blue tied the game in the first minute with a dunk from Tremell Murphy. McGlynn scored back-to-back baskets to put White on top. In the final minute, Norton scored a three-point for Blue after a steal but it wasn't enough as Blue fell 18-10 to White in the final game.

"Once they settled in, I was really happy with our guys' effort," DeVries said. "They were excited to play today and be in front of some people. It was exciting to get things going and move on to that next exhibition game."

The Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center Nov 4, at 2 p.m. for their first exhibition game against Coe College.
