Men’s Basketball Collects A 14-Point Road Win At Milwaukee

Bulldogs impressive in improving to 6-1 to open the season.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Drake University men's basketball team improved to 6-1 with a convincing 75-61 road win at Milwaukee, Thursday evening.

Drake rallied from a slow start to lead by as many as 24 points in the second half to cruise to the team's third-biggest margin of victory in a road win since 2010. Eight players saw 20 or more minutes of action with Nick McGlynn (Stoughton, Wis.) leading the way with 15 points in his home state after recovering from early foul trouble.

Fellow Wisconsinite Brady Ellingson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) had one of his best games as a Bulldog with 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Nick Norton chipped in with 14 points, all in the first half, to help Drake take decisive control of the contest.

While McGlynn was saddled with early foul trouble, freshman Liam Robbins (Davenport, Iowa) stepped up with nine points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Darius Roy led Milwaukee (2-7) with 19 points as Drake held the Panthers to just 34 percent shooting.

"I thought we were locked in on the defensive end and put a lot of activity on the ball," said Drake head coach Darian DeVries. "Outside of those first two or three minutes, that was as probably as good of a defensive effort as we've had and then our offense got going."

Drake closed the first half on a 14-2 run to take a 38-22 lead into halftime behind 14 first-half points from Norton. The senior was 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-5 from the three-point arc in the opening half to help the Bulldogs overcome a sluggish start.

Milwaukee opened the game with an 8-0 advantage and held the lead until back-to-back three-pointers from Norton put the Bulldogs up 21-18 with 7:23 left in the half. After opening the game shooting 1-of-10, Drake made 10 of its next 18 shots from the floor to key the big run heading into halftime.

"We just have to stay aggressive on offense," Ellingson said. "That's what coach DeVries says. Our shots will fall – we've got enough shooters on this team – and we can't let it get to us when they aren't falling."

The break did not slow the Bulldogs as they extended their lead to 24, 54-30, on back-to-back three-pointers from D.J. Wilkins (Merrillville, Ind.) with 13 minutes left in the game. An 11-2 run by Milwaukee followed to trim the Drake advantage to 15 points, but the Bulldogs answered with seven-straight points to stretch the lead back out to more than 20 points. Milwaukee never seriously challenged that lead again as Drake played out its entire bench in the road win.

The Bulldogs return to campus to buckle down for final exams next week before returning to action Saturday, Dec. 15, for the final Hy-Vee Classic against Iowa State.
