OMAHA, Neb. – The Drake University women's tennis team cruised to a pair of win Saturday at Omaha, Neb. as the Bulldogs defeated Omaha, 6-1, and North Dakota, 6-1.
"I'm very pleased with how the team played today on our first road trip. We had a few injuries and a few players really step up. It was a full team effort. They just out competed their opponents today," said Drake head coach
Mai-Ly Tran.
Drake began the day by taking the doubles point over the Mavericks as
Tess Herder and
Liza Petushkova rolled past Natalie Lorentz and Savanna Crowell, 6-1 at No 1., while
Summer Brills and
Joely Lomas clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman
Megan Webb wasted little time giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Fellow freshman
Liza Petushkova continued her strong start to the spring season with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3. Herder blanked Savanna Crowell, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 to secure the Bulldog win. Brills and
Alex Kozlowski earned wins at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively, to give Drake its 6-1 win.
In the nightcap over North Dakota, Drake continued its strong doubles play and earned the doubles point for the fifth-straight match.
Herder put together another impressive performance as she topped Isa Sullivan 6-2, 6-1, while Lomas defeated Jaylee Yasunaga, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Petushkova improved her singles record to 5-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Brills won in straight sets, while Webb came back to win in three, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 at No. 5 singles to secure the 6-1 win over UND.
