Softball Completes Comeback Victory Over Pacific at Hall of Fame Classic

Drake closes out the Hall of Fame Classic Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Purdue.

OKLAHOMA CITY – A three-run seventh inning lifted the Drake University softball team to a 4-2 victory over Pacific Saturday evening. For the second consecutive day, the Bulldogs split a pair of games at the Hall of Fame Classic after dropping a 3-1 game earlier in the day to St. Francis.

Drake (15-9) led 1-0 early over Pacific but fell behind 2-1 later to Pacific (8-14) before Sarah Maddox (Henderson, Nev.) led off the seventh inning with a solo home run. Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Macy Johnson (Winterset, Iowa) followed with back-to-back hits for a 3-2 Drake lead. A sacrifice fly by Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) brought in Johnson for the Bulldogs fourth run of the game.

Frank went 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Johnson roped an RBI double in the first inning to score Frank.

Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) picked up the win over Pacific after she pitched four innings of relief. Smith (4-3) allowed just one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Smith started the game against St. Francis where she pitched five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and tied a season-best with seven strikeouts.

In the two games, Nicole Timmons (Davenport, Iowa) combined to pitch five innings. Timmons gave up just one unearned run on three hit with four strikeouts.

St. Francis (13-11) took a quick lead over the Bulldogs with two runs on three hits to open the first inning. Back-to-back doubles in the fifth gave the Red Flash a 3-0 lead before Drake got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.

In the fifth, Melissa Schlotzhauer (Pilot Grove, Mo.) was hit by a pitch to open the frame before Johnson drew a walk. A single by Wright loaded the bases as Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) reached on a fielders' choice that allowed Schlotzhauer to score. The Bulldogs' bats managed just three hits against the Red Flash.
