O'FALLON, Ill. – The Drake University women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Friday at the St. Clair Tennis Club in O'Fallon, Ill.
 
"UMSL is a very good team. I am very pleased with how the team competed today. They displayed so much grit and they hustled for every ball," said Drake head coach Mai-Ly Tran.
 
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point. Tess Herder and Liza Petushkova topped Kristine Lindal and Salome Bleuler, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Summer Brills and Kenya Williams clinched the point with a 6-3 victory at No. 2.
 
Williams put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Annie Hays at No. 4 singles. Brills earned a straight set victory over Lindal, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 to give Drake a commanding 3-0 lead.
 
Herder clinched the match as she defeated Bleuler 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
 
Petushkova came back from being down a set to win, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, while Mela Jaglarz recorded the final win of the day for the Bulldogs at No. 5.
  
"Tess played a great match to clinch for us. Mela stepped up and beat a tough opponent. We gained a lot of confidence going into tomorrow's match," said Tran.
 
Drake will close out the weekend on Saturday as the Bulldogs squares off against SIUE. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
