Doubles Teams Win Two Matches On First Day Of Drake Invitational

Bulldogs begin singles play Saturday at 9 a.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake University men's tennis team's picked up two wins in doubles play during the first day of the Drake Invitational at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

The doubles team of Finley Hall (Wellington, New Zealand)  and Freddie Powell (Poole, England) opened the day with a 6-3 win over North Dakota's Nejc Sitar and Lukas Buth. The pair advanced to face Nebraska's Victor Moreno and Isaac Nortey, falling 6-3 as the Huskers advanced to the finals of the 'A' Doubles bracket.

On the other side of the bracket, Bayo Philips (Houston, Texas) and Barny Thorold (Loughborough, England) had a first-round bye and defeated Creighton's Mac Mease and Stratton Brown, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals. However, there they were tripped up by eventual bracket winners Patrick Whaling and Chase Johnson of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-4.

The second day of the Drake Invitational is set to begin Saturday, Sept. 22, at 9 a.m. at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center with four brackets of singles action.
