Overseas Bulldogs Update - Jan. 27

An update on some of the top performances Drake standouts playing professional across the globe


           The Drake University men's basketball program has a long and storied tradition of preparing players for long and prosperous basketball careers overseas in international competition. Currently, nearly a dozen Bulldogs are competing across the globe. Here are some of the top performances by former Drake standouts in the last week courtesy of Eurobasket.com

Josh Young (Germany) led Rasta Vechta to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked EnBW Ludwigsburg (9-8) crushing them 112-92 in the German BBL on Saturday night. He scored 17 points and added 4 assists in 25 minutes. Rasta Vechta (12-5) is now third in the BBL. It was his team's ninth consecutive victory in a row. Young is averaging 12.0ppg, 1.9rpg and 3.0apg. 

Benjamin Simons (Spain) led Rio Natura Monbus Obradoiro CAB to a victory against the fifth-ranked Unicaja Malaga (11-6) 89-86 in the Spanish Liga Endesa in Sunday night's game. Simons scored 15 points. Rio Natura Monbus Obradoiro CAB (7-10) is 11th in the Liga Endesa. Simons averages 10.7ppg and 2.1rpg in 12 games he played so far. 

AJ Calvin (Germany), who plays in the German ProB (third division) and could not help ETB Wohnbau (3-14) in their game last Saturday. Despite Calvin's performance the 12th-placed ETB Wohnbau (3-14) lost 90-71 at home by the much higher-ranked Oldenburg (#5) in the North group. He was the top scorer with 26 points. Calvin also added 4 rebounds in 31 minutes. In his first season with the team, Calvin averages 15.6ppg, 6.0rpg, 1.6apg and 1.6spg. 

Reed Timmer (Germany) was not able to help Walter Tigers Tuebingen (7-12) in their last game. Despite Timmer's good performance Walter Tigers Tuebingen lost 73-88 on the road to the much higher-ranked (#4) MLP Academics Heidelberg. He was the second highest scorer with 14 points. Timmer also added 3 assists. It was Walter Tigers Tuebingen's fifth consecutive loss in a row. Timmer averages 17.1ppg, 3.2rpg and 3.1apg in 17 games. 

Gary Ricks (Mexico) was not able to secure a victory for Abejas de Guanajuato (13-19) in their game against Soles (19-11) in the Mexican LNBP (second division). Ricks scored 9 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 29 minutes. But the fifth-placed Abejas de Guanajuato (13-19) was defeated 92-79 in Mexicali by the second-ranked Soles in the South group. It's Ricks' averages 12.5ppg, 3.2rpg and 2.3apg.
