FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Drake University softball team defeated SIUE 3-2 Sunday, Feb. 24 on the final day of the Razorback Invitational. Drake (10-4) went 5-0 this weekend in Arkansas, including a win over host and No. 12 Arkansas on Saturday.
 
The Bulldogs scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Mandi Roemmich (West Des Moines, Iowa) and Macy Johnson (Winterset, Iowa) drew back-to-back one-out walks. Sophomore Libby Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa) then singled down the right field line, her fifth hit in the tournament, to score Roemmich. Drake then drew three consecutive walks, the last two by Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) and Kennedy Frank (Chesterfield, Mo.), to drive in its final two runs.
 
Nicole Timmons (Davenport, Iowa) pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and worked around eight walks. Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) pitched 0.2 innings in relief and struck out two, and got out of a based loaded jam in the sixth holding the Cougars to just one run. Timmons improved to 6-2 with the win.
 
Drake travels to Tucson, Ariz. to face No. 14 Arizona Thursday, Feb. 28. The Bulldogs will then play in the Wildcat Invitational, March 1-3, where they will play Arizona again, James Madison, Minnesota twice and Kent State.
