Volleyball Opens 2019 Season at EIU Panther Invitational

Bulldogs play three matches this weekend to open the season

The Drake University volleyball team begins its 2019 campaign Friday afternoon with the first of three matches at the EIU Panther Invitational in Charleston, Ill.

The Bulldogs open play against Memphis Friday at noon followed by a pair of matches Saturday afternoon. The second day of competition features a 2 p.m. match against South Dakota State followed by a 6 p.m. tilt against the hosts, Eastern Illinois. The tournament finale against EIU will be broadcast on ESPN+

Drake's resurgent program is aiming for its third-straight 20-win season following last year's 21-15 mark that saw the team advance to the postseason for the first time since 1995 with an NIVC appearance.

The Bulldogs were tabbed sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll after losing three starters from last year's squad. However, the team added six incredibly talented newcomers to its stable of returning talent for the 2019 season.

Following this weekend's tournament to open the season, the Bulldogs return home next weekend for three matches as part of the Drake Invitational at the Knapp Center.
