Volleyball Wins At WIU, 3-1

Bulldogs rally to dominate the final three sets.

MACOMB, Ill. - Led by 16 kills from freshman Haley Bush (Waukee, Iowa), the Drake University volleyball rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Western Illinois, 3-1, Tuesday evening at Western Hall.

After dropping the first set, 25-20, the Bulldogs cruised in the next three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-14.

Drake (.185) was far more efficient offensively in those final three sets, hitting .324, .481 and .519 to dispatch WIU (3-4).

In addition to Bush's 16 kills, Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) added 11 kills while Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Iowa) added 18. The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Kylee Macke (Ankeny, Iowa) had a game-high 13 digs and two aces. 

Drake's defense held WIU to just .156 hitting on the match and just .117 percent hitting in the final three sets. 

JoJo Kruize led WIU with 11 kills.

The win over WIU begins a challenging week for the Bulldogs with two matches against ranked opponents on the horizon this weekend at the Bluejay Classic in Omaha, Neb. In addition to Drake and Omaha, the field includes No. 12 Washington and No. 17 Creighton.
