Volleyball Falls In Two Five-Set Matches Friday

Bulldogs finish the non-connference season Saturday morning.

WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNCW and Western Carolina bested the Drake University volleyball team in a pair of five-set matches Friday at the UNCW Hampton Inns Invitational.

Drake (5-7) opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Western Carolina followed by a 3-2 setback to the hosts, UNCW in the nightcap. In the loss to UNCW, the Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set before ultimately falling.

Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with 34 total kills on the day coming on 94 total attacks. Gillian Gergen (Janesville, Iowa) continued her strong play with 18 kills on 34 swings and a team-high 14 blocks.

Facing match point against UNCW (7-2) in the third set, the Bulldogs showed resolve with a 7-1 run to battle back from a 21-18 deficit to win the set, 25-22, and force a fourth set. Elle Tubbs' (Clinton, Iowa) serving in the fourth set helped Drake take an early 8-6 lead and the Bulldogs held that lead for the remainder of the set to tie the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 win.

Drake also held an early lead in the decisive fifth set, but four-straight points from UNCW gave the Seahawks a 10-6 lead than enabled them to take the set, 15-8, to defeat the Bulldogs, 3-2.

UNCW cruised to wins in the first two sets, 25-19, 25-17 before Drake rallied back. Plock notched 19 kills against UNCW while Michelle Rabbitt added 10. Paige Aspinwall (Dayton Grove, Minn.) had 35 assists to her hitters.

The Bulldogs opened the day with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-10 loss to Western Carolina. Haley Bush (Waukee, Iowa) came on strong late to finish with 19 kills in the loss while Gergen had 12 kills on 18 attempts and a match-high seven blocks. Kylee Macke (Ankeny, Iowa) helped Drake's defense extend the match with 29 digs. 

Drake took an early 2-0 lead in the decisive fifth set against the Catamounts, but WCU answered with four-straight points to take control of the set en route to the 15-10 set victory and 3-2 win in the match.

The Bulldogs return to the court to conclude the Hampton Inns Invitational and their non-conference season Saturday at 9 a.m. CDT against North Carolina A&T.
