Women’s Golf Ties For Second At MVC Preview

The Drake University women's golf team finished tied for second in the 15-team MVC Preview in Burlington, Iowa. The Bulldogs' 54-hole total of 950 (322-307-321) was tied with Missouri State, and eight strokes behind the first-place team, UNI.

"We did not play our best golf today, but to finish in the position we did, playing the way we did, says a lot about how far we've come as a team," said Drake head coach Rachael Pruett-Hornbaker. "The course and conditions were very challenging and we managed both better than most of the teams."

The Bulldogs' low-scorer in the event was SigurlaugJonsdottir who continued her solid play after a challenging first round to finish with a total of 234 (81-77-76) to finish tied for seventh. One stroke behind Jonsdottir was Aimee Gerschke who fired a third-round 80 to finish tied for ninth at 235 (78-77-80).

"Having Sigurlaug and Aimee place in the top 10 is fantastic," Pruett-Hornbaker said. "I'm proud of the way they and the team kept their heads in each round knowing that every shot mattered, regardless of how well or poorly they felt they were playing."

Sophomore Haeri Lee also recorded a third-round 80, finishing with 238 (82-76-80) in a tie for 14th.

Kristen Giles and Abby Marting rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring, finishing with 243 (81-77-85) and 258 (92-80-86), respectively. Drake also fielded three individual golfers for the event, all of whom finished between 80th and 89th. Erica Olberding was the low-scoring individual for the Bulldogs, with a final total of 261 strokes and tying for 80th. Sam Paulak and Reilly Krohe finished 87th (272) and tied for 89th (276), respectively.

"This week was about learning the course and how to best manage it," Pruett-Hornbaker added. "We now have the knowledge to improve and capitalize on in the spring and feel a championship is within reach our reach. I'm excited to keep working hard with the ladies on the team and we truly have an exciting season in front of us."
