DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis team lost to Gonzaga, 5-2, in a closely-contested dual on Saturday night at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Gonzaga prevailed in two third-set tiebreakers to leave Des Moines with the victory.
Oliver Johansson and
Matija Matic won 6-2 in No. 2 doubles, and
Finley Hall and
Evan Fragistas emerged victorious, 6-2, at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for Drake.
Barny Thorold and
Reid Jarvis fell, 4-6, at No. 1.
Johansson continued a dominant day with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 to give Drake a 2-0 lead. Gonzaga battled back with wins at No. 5 and No. 1 to knot the dual at 2-2.
Fragistas fell in an intense match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, as Gonzaga leapt to a 3-2 lead. The Zags clinched it as Hall fell, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7. Hall fought through a compromised leg in the third set.
Freddie Powell, filling in at the last minute because Matic was battling an illness, lost in three sets.
After three duals in two days, Drake (1-2) will have a week to rest before traveling south for a pair of duals in Fayetteville, Ark., on Jan. 25. The Bulldogs will take on Arkansas at 12 p.m. and Middle Tennessee at 8 p.m.
