Men’s Basketball Gets a 23-Point Win At Evansville

Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center Sunday looking to extend home win streak

EVANSVILLE, IND. - The Drake University men's basketball team picked up a 23-point, 73-50, win at Evansville Wednesday evening behind 62.5 percent shooting from the three-point arc.

The 23-point margin of victory equaled the Bulldogs' biggest margin in a road game during the last decade and was the biggest in a league road game during that span. Drake led for all but 14 seconds of the contest.

"I loved our response tonight after the SIU loss," said Drake head coach Darian DeVries. "Their approach to practice the last few days set the tone and I thought they came out with tremendous purpose and set the tone in the first half."

Drake (14-6, 4-3 MVC) converted on 10-of-16 three-point attempts with Roman Penn and Jonah Jackson going a combined 6-of-7 from the arc. Penn finished with 14 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Jackson scored all nine of his points in a first half that set the tone for the game as Drake enjoyed a 20-point halftime lead.

"They were very together and unselfish tonight and competed," DeVries said of the Bulldogs. "Because of that, we were able to get a lot of good shots. We were going inside-out, playing strong, playing physical and playing downhill."

Liam Robbins added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. He also added three blocks to move into a tie for third in the Drake record book with 53 blocks this season.

Evansville (9-11, 0-7 MVC) was held to 30.2 percent shooting. Shamar Givance led the Purple Aces with nine points, all on three-pointers.

Drake jumped on Evansville early with nine-straight points to hold a 9-0 lead five minutes into the contest that later stretched into a 14-3 advantage. The Aces briefly pulled within five points at 21-16, but a pair of three-pointers from Anthony Murphy put the Bulldogs up 32-19 with less than four minutes in the half. Murphy finished with eight points and seven rebounds.

The three-point barrage continued as Drake was 8-of-13 from the arc to open the game and give Drake a 46-26 lead at halftime. Three of those three-pointers were from the hot hand of  Jackson, who made his first three attempts, while Murphy and Roman Penn were each 2-of-2 from the arc. Penn also added seven first-half assists.

The 46 points were the third-most by the Bulldogs in the opening half of a game against a Division I foe. The Bulldogs' defense held UE to 29.2 percent shooting in the first half with no Aces scoring more than five first-half points.

After opening the second half with a pair of buckets, the Bulldog offense went quiet for more than four minutes as UE pulled within 14 points before a Wilkins' three-pointer with 14:18 left put the Bulldogs back on the scoreboard and quickly stretch Drake's lead back out to 20 points with 12 minutes left. Drake's lead remained at 20 or more points until the final horn.

The Bulldogs return to Des Moines, where the team has won 14-straight games, to host Missouri State Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Missouri State started the season as the preseason league favorite.
