ShanQuan Hemphill Joins Drake Men’s Basketball Program

Dynamic forward was junior college teammates with Tremell Murphy and D.J. Wilkins

ShanQuan 'Tank' Hemphill, a 6-6 forward from Gary, Ind., has joined the Drake University men's basketball team, head coach Darian DeVries announced Friday, May 29.

Hemphill is transferring to Drake from Green Bay, where he spent the last two seasons and will have one remaining year of eligibility.

"We are excited to have ShanQuan Hemphill joining our program," DeVries said. "ShanQuan will bring value to our team in athleticism, toughness, rebounding and an ability to be a dynamic scorer at the wing. Most importantly, our fans will enjoy watching him. His competitive spirit on the court is contagious!"

Hemphill missed the majority of the 2019-20 season due to injury, but as a junior, he started all 38 games and scored in double figures 28 times for the Phoenix. He averaged 11.7 points per game on 52.8 percent shooting and was named to the CIT All-Tournament team after scoring 21 points with 13 rebounds in the CIT title game. That was one of his five double-doubles on the season.

Before enrolling at Green Bay, Hemphill played two seasons at Florida SouthWestern under current Drake assistant coach Marty Richter. There, he earned All-Suncoast Conference first-team honors in 2018 and scored in double figures 27 times during the season, including a career-high 29 points. He ranked third on the team with 14.2 points per game and shot a team-best 60.4 percent from the field.

While at Florida SouthWestern, he was teammates with current Bulldogs Tremell Murphy and D.J. Wilkins and hails from the same Northwestern Indiana region as future teammates Murphy, Wilkins, Roman Penn and Jonah Jackson.

An explosive athlete, Hemphill has appeared on ESPN Sports Center's Top-10 three times and was a state runner-up in the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 11 inches.
