DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University volleyball team got a combined 35 kills from
Emily Plock and
Haley Bush to help the Bulldogs defeat visiting Evansville, 3-1, Monday evening at the Knapp Center. The win secured the Bulldogs' two-match sweep of the Aces.
Drake (8-5, 6-4 MVC) prevailed by set scores of 17-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-20.
Plock's 17 kills came on 31 swings for a .387 hitting percentage along with four blocks. Bush had 18 kills and six digs.
Kylee Macke equaled a season high with 33 digs in the defensive effort as Drake held Evansville to .121 hitting while
Gillian Gergen and
Kacie Rewerts combined for seven blocks.
Evansville (3-11, 2-10 MVC) was led by 15 kills from Melanie Feliciano.
Drake hit just .096 in the first set as Evansville pulled away to win the set with a 13-6 run midway through the frame. However, Drake responded by hitting .323 and siding out on 90 percent of Evansville's serves in the second set to cruise to a 25-11 win in the set behind a 9-0 run fueled by Macke's serving. One of Macke's team-high three aces came during that run.
After that dominating second-set victory, Drake only trailed by one point in one rally for the rest of the evening to close out the match with its second 3-1 victory over the Aces.
The Bulldogs travel to Terre Haute, Ind., next for an MVC series against Indiana State March 14-15.
